2005 was also the 50th anniversary of the first documented successful open-source project: the SHARE project among users of the IBM 704 mainframe. A year later it had saved the participants over 1.5 million US dollars (serious money now - even more serious fifty years ago). For those who haven't heard the story, there are references in my blog.

So, happy fiftieth birthday open-source. I wonder what annual savings will be generated in your fiftieth anniversary year?
