What we need is a web site where hardware vendors can register their Linux compatible hardware, certifying that it meets clear and strict compatibility standards.
Who is going to run that web page and be the certification authority? And who is going to pay for it? The vendors of, say, USB modems or flash card readers??
Certification is an expensive task and I fear most HW vendors don't think it'll pay off (with the notable exception of expensive server hardware, such as high-end RAID controllers).
