There is a effort going on in this front called compatiblelinux:
http://www.compatiblelinux.org

It's been launched by Junta de Extremadura known for it's gnuLinex (a.k.a. Linex) and an Spanish university called Rey Juan Carlos.
Its hardware database is not really extensive but pretty useful nevertheless.
