Isn't this what Ubuntu is silently trying to do with its hardware database? Collecting enough info from users for it to be statistically relevant, then through some degree of automation filter out a list of working hardware.

Not just Ubuntu. Practically any distro.

Yeah, but the Gnome version of Ubuntu has the hwdb-client package that
lets you submit your hardware details to a database after running some
tests on each component that you answer to say whether it worked or not.

If (like me) you're using KUbuntu you can do:

$ sudo apt-get install hwdb-client
$ hwdb-gui

To contribute to the database.

Although I've just noticed that whilst sound works fine in KDE it doesn't
work in the hwdb-gui app.

Yes, I have disabled arts (the KDE sound server)..
