Switzerland to run SUSE

Novell has announced a deal with the Swiss federal government whereby much of the federal infrastructure will move over to SUSE Linux. All told, Novell expects that over 3000 servers will run SUSE.

Good for Novell - there's been a lot of redhat press lately, so it's nice to see Novell get a piece of the pie too.

Our SLES servers have been rock solid, taking over infrastructure duties from Sun and HP servers, and we're been quite happy with Novell.

The only thing I am wondering about in the article is this sentence: "Novell was selected following a formal tender process during which the company conclusively demonstrated it can provide the strongest Linux solution for public sector environments." (emphasis mine). Does it mean they are going to replace all misc Linux system with Novell (good news for Novell, but no win for Linux and free software in general), or are they going to replace other systems with Linux too ?

Just a few months ago, the Swiss Foreign Affairs Department was seen in Microsoft ads, telling everybody how much they like their Microsoft solutions which allow them to remotely upgrade their servers across their network of Embassies and Consulates. I doubt they are going to switch to Linux overnight.

But in any case, having a formalised Linux solution in hand can only help to push for Linux when new servers are installed or old ones upgraded.

I'm quite happy to read it as "if you want linux, you get Novell". In other words they may be converting other distros to SuSE, but they could well be converting other nixen and/or Windows too.

So it's certainly a win for Novell/SuSE, but there's no reason to assume it's not a win for linux too :-)

Cheers,
Wol

It's probably more than only other Linuxes to SUSE : the federal council is actually trying to cut into the budget as much as it can. We'll see. The fact should also be noted that around here (Switzerland), Novell had always a pretty good customer base, and that the Swiss marketing team is not as lame as it seems to be in other countries.

From the Swiss administration site we get more precise information. http://internet.isb.admin.ch/internet/index.html?lang=en

« Contrary to earlier statements made in the press, it is not the case that all servers in the federal administration will run on Linux. »

The fact is that SUSE will be the Linux platform where Linux is used, for standardisation and maintenance cost reduction (french article is a little more explicit). But still slowly increasing.
