Ricoh USA is encouraging linux support for one of its color printers, according to KDE.News. "Printer manufacturer Ricoh USA, listening to the energetic advocating of their Linux engineer, has decided to provide Cristian Tibirna of the KDE printing development team with a professional RICOH CL4000DN colour laser printer. Thanks to this support the KDE printing development team will be able to do better tests of the new features in CUPS 1.2 and extend the degree of support in KDE Print for professional printing features which currently lack support by Free Software. Ricoh's Linux engineer and driver developer George Liu said "What we want to do is support Linux printing, and KDE Print is the most successful printing environment.""

I experienced something similar the other day. I was looking for a cheap laser for printing some course-material for my students, and showed up in the store with a list of well-supported printers collected from the internet.

I'm guessing 90% of the printers there would have, in actuality, worked well with Linux. But 1 of them had a large Tux on it, next to the Windows and Mac icons.

Guess which one I bougth ?

At home I plugged it in and turned on the computer, Mandriva informed me "there seems to be a new printer connected, would you like to configure it?", "configuration" consisted of telling Mandriva that I'm in europe, so I tend to use A4 papers, and that was literally it.

This is nice news.

Hopefully Linux support is becoming a big trend. It's nice to see Tux
stamped on the box, and I think you're far from alone in the realm of
Linux users - we're likely to choose hardware that proudly displays Linux
compatibility. So maybe that will make said compatibility an important
thing.
