Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series,
with Acclaimed Author Arnold Robbins as Series Editor
Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series Books Deliver
"Real World Code from Real World Applications" with Signature Light Sabers
on Cover
Upper Saddle River, October, 2005--- Prentice Hall, the leading publisher of
high-quality books for technology users, announces the official launch of
the Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series-- with the
publication of two new books for Linux programmers and administrators--
which promise to deliver "Real world code from real world applications" in
each Series book.
Arnold Robbins has been appointed as Series Editor, due in part to his
achievement as a well-known and highly-respected book author, most recently
of the acclaimed Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals, published
by Prentice Hall in 2004. Immediately identified for its distinctive cover
featuring a Jedi light saber, Robbins' book soon drew wide praise from
programmers around the world for its unique approach of teaching Linux
programming by using real programs from production applications in the
examples, something permissible with Open Source software.
Consequently, the overwhelmingly positive feedback to Robbins' effective
pedagogy, helped to launch the idea for an entire series whose defining
principle is that "reading programs is one of the best ways to learn," as
Robbins writes in the preface of both new books. He adds, "The aim of the
series is to be your guide up the software development learning curve, so to
speak, and to help you learn by showing you as much real code as possible."
This month, Prentice Hall publishes two new books within the Series.
SERIES TITLES
The three flagship books in the Prentice Hall Open Source Development Series
are as follows:
· Linux® Debugging and Performance Tuning: Tips and Techniques,
authored by Steve Best, [published October, 2005], covers debugging
techniques and tools that can be used to solve both kernel and application
problems on the Linux operating system. The book includes many sample
programs that demonstrate how to use the best profiling and debugging tools
available for Linux. [14 chapters, 427 pages; ISBN 0-13-149247-0; U.S.
$49.99]
· The Linux® Kernel Primer: A Top-Down Approach for x86 and PowerPC
Architectures, authored by Claudia Salzberg Rodriguez; Gordon Fischer;
Steven Smolski, [published September, 2005], provides all the skills and
techniques needed to succeed with Linux kernel programming. [10 chapters,
616 pages; ISBN 0-13-118163-7; U.S. $49.99]
· Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals, authored by Arnold
Robbins [published April, 2004], teaches the fundamental Linux system call
APIs by presenting code from everyday production programs. This approach
permits the reader to see how Linux APIs are used, in addition to getting a
handle on practical issues such as performance, portability and robustness.
[16 chapters, 720 pages; ISBN 0131429647; U.S. $39.99].
FORTHCOMING [Early 2006]:
· Unix to Linux Porting: A Comprehensive Reference, authored by
Alfredo Mendoza, Chakarat Skawratananond, and Artis Walker [to publish May,
2006].
· SELinux by Example: Using Security Enhanced Linux, authored by Frank
Mayer, David Caplan, Karl MacMillan [to publish June, 2006]
· Understanding AJAX, authored by Joshua Eichorn [to publish August,
2006].

Praise for Arnold Robbins' book, Linux Programming by Example:
· "This is a book that is surely set to become a programmer's classic.
It has all the elements of a classic title: excellent technical content,
clear exposition and an authorial voice that inspires confidence in the
reader. If you're just looking for the headline then you can skip the rest
of the review right now - this is one book that we can recommend
wholeheartedly." -- Pan Pantziarka, TechBookReport.com; Link here for the
full review: http://www.techbookreport.com/tbr0089.html
· Robbins' book was referenced as an "Essential Title" in the
"Development in Linux" category of a feature article titled, "Essential
Linux and Open Source Books", published by the LinuxWorld Magazine in
January 2005. [Volume 3 Issue 1].

Series Editor Arnold Robbins Explains the Series Light Saber Theme:
Series Editor Arnold Robbins includes a note within the Preface of
his own book addressing the Series light saber theme. (Each book has a light
saber printed on the cover and at the start of each new chapter):
"In the hands of a Jedi Knight, a light saber is both a powerful weapon and
a thing of beauty. Its use demonstrates the power, knowledge, control of the
Force, and arduous training of the Jedi who wields it. The elegance of the
light saber mirrors the elegance of the original UNIX API design. There,
too, the studied, precise use of the APIs and the Software Tools and GNU
design principles lead to today's powerful, flexible, capable GNU/Linux
system. This system demonstrates the knowledge and understanding of the
programmers who wrote all its components."
SERIES BIO SKETCHES: Our Series Authors includes:
SERIES EDITOR ARNOLD ROBBINS: Arnold has been working with Unix systems of
various sorts, GNU/Linux systems, C, C++ and all the other major Unix tools
since 1980. As a long-time volunteer for the GNU project, he has been the
maintainer of
GAWK (GNU Awk) for many years. Arnold was on the balloting committee for the
original POSIX Shell and Utilities standard in the early 1990s and helped to
shape the POSIX standard for awk (and a few other things). Besides Linux
Programming by Example: The Fundamentals, Arnold is the author of Unix In A
Nutshell, Effective awk Programming, Learning the vi Editor, Classic Shell
Scripting, and the GDB and vi Pocket References, all published by O'Reilly.
AUTHOR STEVE BEST: Linux® Debugging and Performance Tuning: Tips and
Techniques; Steve Best works in the Linux Technology Center of IBM in
Austin, Texas. He is currently working on Linux storage-related products.
Steve has led the Journaled File System (JFS) for Linux project. Steve has
worked on Linux-related projects since 1999 and has done extensive work in
operating system development focusing on file systems, internationalization,
and security. Steve is the author of numerous magazine articles, many
presentations, and the file system chapters in Performance Tuning for Linux
Servers (IBM Press 2005).
