Minix 3 hits the net
[Posted October 24, 2005 by corbet]
Andrew Tanenbaum's Minix system was, among other things, the
source-available (if not entirely free) operating system which got Linus
Torvalds going. Minix has been somewhat overshadowed by Linux, but it is
far from gone. Back in June, Mr. Tanenbaum
announced that he was working on a
Minix 3. The results of that work are now available from
minix3.org. It is a small, microkernel
system which is aimed simultaneously at education and the embedded systems
market. It is released under the BSD license, and there is, of course,
an
associated book in the works. (Thanks to Guillaume
Pierre).
