UTF8 is nice but the application support is oh so bad.

  • Gnome can't read my files in non UTF8 folders
  • Mysql can't handle it in fulltext search.
  • irssi doesn't convert
  • ssh doesn't handle remoting to latin1 system
  • The virtual consoles of Linux doesn't support them out of the box for me.

For ssh, use screen. I don't know why the virtual terminals don't work; have you tried unicode_start?

Or try uxterm. It always gives me keybinding issues, but it does do unicode.
