Neuros solicits feedback on Linux-based PMP/R design (LinuxDevices)

According to LinuxDevices.com, Neuros is looking for input on the development of its next, Linux-based media player. "Neuros is currently designing a successor to the 442 portable media player, and has published the specifications for a development board that it calls the 'first prototype.' Neuros invites hackers, open source software authors, and interested readers to review and weigh in on the design, which is expected to be finalized in about a week."

Neuros lost me some time back

I am 100% behind the idea of players that support open formats, but Neuros seemed to go into deep-freeze while Apple pushed out players all over the price and capability spectrum. With gnupod I can stream my ogg's into mp3 "on the fly" into my iPod(s), which frankly at this point is good enough for me.

The idea is for people (like the rockbox crew) who write *free software firmware* to be able to affect the design.

This has nothing to do with stuff running on your PC at all.

Wow. That thing seems pretty cool. USB, IDE interface, Nic card, lots of drive space etc.

I would make a nice little portable computer, especially if a person takes road trips a lot. A foldable keyboard to go with it or something like that.

Hope it's open enough to run Debian's ARM port on it.

Looks a bit like the curently available FlashTrax:
http://www.smartdisk.com/eWeb/smartdiskus/www/staticpages...

No NIC card (but maybe through USB or COMPACTFlash network adapter), but maybe possible to connect a keybord to the infrared (has an infrared remote control), and its main FLASH can be uploaded.

When going to the "about" menu screen, it is displayed using "Linux, microwindows, ..." - but I still wonder under which license, because I am still looking for "all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable." (extract of GPL paragraph 3)
