Single-company free software

Mmmh. Of course we worry about what might happen when the proprietarians invade our free world, because we know their business models: discontinued software is just one of the threats users of proprietary software are exposed to, all the time.

The GPL however cleanly separates the rights to use, modify and distribute free software from the business concerns usually mixed in with (proprietary) software licenses. That does mean that free software companies have to invest in coming up with a business model that works for them, since it's not as simple as getting enough users on the upgrade-train.

The crazy vision that software should be like water and earth has turned out to be incredibly successful, especially for users. I like this way of the dodo. ;-)
