A first look at GIMP 2.4 (NewsForge)

NewsForge looks at what's coming with the GIMP 2.4 release. "2.4 is the first GIMP release to support color management, a feature dearly missed by photographers and designers up until now. In the preferences dialog you will find a new Color Management control panel where you can set rendering intent and specify your working colorspace and device profiles."

I know it's been said many times before, but the lack of 16-bit support for the foreseeable future is sad.

I already have to use cinepaint, despite serious stability and other problems, for initial work on any raw photos. 8-bit is brutally cruel to high quality images captured at 12 bits.

Raw support + 16-bit is becoming the norm. GIMP needs this.

You are right. For example Krita (from KOffice) supports 16 bit images, CMYK and OpenEXR HDR images in the development version allready. Perhaps this competion will speed up the development of Gimp a litte bit.. :-)

Maybe you are not aware of it but it is possible to load almost all RAW images with the UFRAW plugin.
UFRAW can adjust the levels, the WB and the colorspace in full 12/16 bits before loading the image. The rest has to be done in 8bit but this is usually not so critical.

"UFRAW can adjust the levels, ... before loading the image."

At which point I'd like to save a 16 bit tiff.

AKAIK, I cannot ask UFRAW to save (?)

Sorry to disapoint you but ... yes you can save in 16bit tiff.

UFRAW comes in 2 versions. The gimp plugin cannot save since its purpose it to load raw images in the Gimp. The standalone version, on the other hand, can save as a 8/16 bit PPM or TIFF (compressed or not) or simply as a JPEG.

You can find a screenshot of the standalone UFRAW here:

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Guide.html

See the 'Save' button? The Gimp plugin is almost identical except for that button.

You will also notice on the screenshot that UFRAW supports ICC color profiles. I can't affirm that the color profiles are correctly interpreted but I am currently using the icc file provided by MInolta for my 7D and the results seem quite good.

" Sorry to disapoint you but ..."

My mistake! All the bigger because I've just found it on my box.

If only I could get back those hours.
