Simply booting the kernel on such an extreme configuration required quite
a bit of scalability work in several areas to minimize cacheline
contention and prevent live locks at boot. I was most excited by the fact
that those changes had finally been accepted into Andrew's kernel and were
queued for inclusion in the mainline.

As you note, however, the fact that it boots doesn't mean that it will run
all codes with perfect scalability. Achieving that is a constant
struggle.
