Tech legend takes on Microsoft (CNN)

CNN covers Mitch Kapor, the software pioneer who introduced products such as Lotus' Notes, Agenda and 1-2-3 spreadsheet, in a new open-source venture. "Kapor's latest effort, an open-source "interpersonal" information manager, has been under development for more than a year but doesn't yet exist. Yet already there are expectations it could challenge Outlook, the industry heavyweight."

Code is needed, not announcements

I think there is a good-sized demand out there for a replacement for Exchange 5.5 that is managable, scalable, reasonably priced - AND compatible with Outlook at least through Office 2000 if not 2002 (XP).

However, although I have heard announcments of several (if not "many") projects to create such a product over the last 18 months, I have yet to see anything concrete.

So - I wish Mr. Kapor luck. I would be very happy to see this happen. But the proof is in the pudding.

We already have Evolution, which, while not perfect, goes a long way toward replacing Outlook. It would be nice if Mr. Kapor would try to build on what already exists, minimizing writing new stuff just for the sake of new stuff.
