It's more likely that the GL implementation isn't optimized for this usage pattern yet (you'd probably get different results when comparing performance of the RENDER extension between Xglx and a traditional X server). This would likely change once Xgl becomes widely used.
Also keep in mind that unless mplayer can use some kind of YUV texture extension in the GL implementation, it still has to do the colourspace conversion in software. Again, this would likely become more widely available along with Xgl usage.
