Parent article: GNOME and the way forward
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned GoneME yet: a fork of GNOME intended to take GNOME back to its UNIX Desktop roots because the founder of GoneME was dissapointed in the "average user" direction of GNOME. All that's left of GoneME now is a stub Wikipedia article and a parody. Clearly, nobody is that interested in changing GNOME's direction.
