Linux vendors cosy up to Debian to push into enterprise (Techworld)

Techworld has an update on the Debian Core Consortium, which is set to be formally announced at LinuxWorld. "Debian's technology is highly regarded, and it is already widely used for tasks such as web hosting, but its diffuse nature has made it difficult for software and hardware vendors to put support plans into place. The DCC aims to give Debian a more predictable release cycle, and to give software and hardware vendors a single point of contact."

Enough with the vaporware press releases already.

Who knows if Debian Core Consortium will ever amount to something, or follow in the footsteps of UnitedLinux, User Linux, and Linux Core Consortium? But a steady stream of stealth press releases and web articles are hyping the "big secret" that is the imminent Debian Core Consortium.

I understand and appreciate the need for marketing noise to attract the attention of CIOs and big business. Ian Murdock knows how to play the game, and plays it well. But can we please take a break from the endless DCC "news"? Let's wait until the actual announcement at LinuxWorld.

Better yet, let's wait until an actual product ships. I am reluctant to bring up yet another Ubuntu comparison, but Ubuntu did get it right. They didn't make any noise until they had an advanced beta available, with final shipment soon to follow. They backed up their press release with actual product.

And isn't it odd that much anti-Ubuntu FUD has been emanating from this direction lately.....

Where there's no fire, there's FUD? :-)

Uh huh, I see Ubuntu going off on their own like Mandriva did from Red Hat. Only much, much faster and with far greater numbers of installs.

"The DCC aims to give Debian a more predictable release cycle."

I think only the Debian Project can give Debian a more predictable release cycle. The DCC, of course, can predictably release cleaned-up snapshots of sid or etch, but that's not a predictable release cycle of Debian proper. The only thing predictable about etch's release cycle is that it will happen when it happens.

That said, if someone else wants to play Ubuntu too, more power to them.
