Unfortunately, the patch does not include any code which actually uses the proposed hooks, making it harder to see how a driver might employ them.

Whilst the patch doesn't contain the code, from reading David's email it sounds like these patches are already used by the current Quadrics drivers, and this is confirmed by this page about the patches on the Quadrics website.

Oddly, though the patches and drivers are themselves GPL'd, to download them from their patches page you need to request a free username and password!
