Database vendors eye open-source effect (News.com)

News.com examines the effect of open source offerings on the database market. "But the effects of open-source pricing and products are already being felt, according to Noel Yuhanna, an analyst at Forrester Research. 'The pressure is on and is starting to build up,' Yuhanna said. Established database vendors 'will be lowering prices in large deals, probably offering more discounts just from the pressure of open source.'"

Hopefully the effects of FLOSS are improved quality, not just lowered price. It's nice that software prices are becoming more buyer-oriented and that traditional monopolies are being broken through free competition, but without better software it will be something of a hollow victory.

I am not a database maven and I don't want to start a flamewar, so take my comments as a general statement on the software industry as a whole.

Amem, bro!

Point in fact, there isn't yet an useable relational free DBMS. There are several SQL (which ain't relational) ones, but these aren't the most popular ones — the most popular ain't ISO SQL compliant, and ain't even a good example of DBMS implementation.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."

RAM is not Random access. Hard drives are rather floppy inside. Flopy disks are hard. Free never means "free" (as in "free software", "free with shipping and handling" or "free with every purchase"). Smart media is dumb. Computers used to be people. Laser printers don't have lasers. Flash media is slow. IBM makes non-IBM compatiable computers....

...And PostgreSQL is a ORDBMS (Object-Relational Database Management System). The words "Relational Database" have a specific meaning independant of algebra, and there are many Relational open source databases, some of them just as (non-)standards compliant as the proprietary ones.
