About UKUUG
------------

UKUUG - the UK's Unix and Open Systems User Group - is a non-profit
organisation and technical forum for the advocacy of open systems,
particularly Unix and Unix-like operating systems, the promotion of free
and open-source software, and the advancement of open programming standards
and networking protocols.

The UKUUG uniquely caters for the needs of people in the industry. Formed in
1976 it is totally funded by membership subscriptions and is completely
independent of specific hardware and software vendors. All profits are used
to further the activities of the organisation.

Membership is composed of those who want to keep abreast of everything that
happens in the world of Open Systems and is drawn from the information
technology, commercial, and research/academic sectors in fairly even
proportions. It is representative of workers in a variety of fields including
software engineering, computer manufacturing, end users, software houses,
universities, and research centres.

The group is run by the Council and supported by the UKUUG Secretariat. There
are also working groups that deal with specific activities.

on their web site: http://www.opensource.org/ whose definition covers
