Addison-Wesley Professional Announces Publication of Second Edition of
Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment; W. Richard Stevens' Original
Classic Fully Updated & Expanded by UNIX System V Developer Stephen
A. Rago
Upper Saddle River, NJ (July, 2005): Addison-Wesley, the leading publisher of
advanced technology books, announces the release of the Second Edition of
Advanced Programming in the UNIX( Environment -- considered the definitive
reference book for professional UNIX systems programmers-- originally
authored by W. Richard Stevens, and now comprehensively revised and expanded
by Stephen A. Rago [Addison-Wesley Professional, copyright 2005 Pearson
Education, Inc., ISBN 0-201-43307-9].
Building on the legendary work of Rich Stevens (the First Edition of Advanced
Programming in the UNIX Environment published in 1992), co-Author Stephen
Rago-- himself one of the Bell Labs developers who built UNIX System V
Release 4, and a technical reviewer for the book's First Edition-- has now
updated this Second Edition for the latest technical advances and to add
support for the leading UNIX and Linux platforms. Examples-including more
than 10,000 lines of downloadable, ISO C source code and more than 400 system
calls and functions- have been tested on the most popular UNIX/Linux
platforms, including: FreeBSD 5.2.1; the Linux 2.4.22 kernel; Solaris 9; and
Darwin 7.4.0, the FreeBSD/Mach hybrid underlying Apple's Mac OS X 10.3.
A sample of the additions covered within this second edition include:
* New chapters on threads and multithreaded programming
* Using the socket interface to drive interprocess communication [IPC]
* Comprehensive coverage of the interfaces added to the latest version of the
POSIX.1 standard
* Platform-specific notes describing where each of the four operating systems
differ in their respective implementations of standard interfaces
The Second Edition numbers 927 pages and consists of 21 chapters, 3
Appendices, and a comprehensive Index.
The book will be available through major chain and independent booksellers
nationwide and through online vendors at a suggested retail price of US
$74.99. To learn more about the book, visit
