India's renaissance: The $100 computer (News.com)

News.com looks at small companies building low cost computers in India. "In about three months, a little-known company called Novatium plans to offer a stripped-down home computer for about $70 or $75. That is about half the price of the standard "thin clients" of this kind now sold in India, made possible in part by some novel engineering choices. Adding a monitor doubles the price to $150, but the company will offer used displays to keep the cost down."

...are that:
  1. they chew through more power than new displays (particularly bad if running from a RAPS, but power in general is not cheap in the 3rd world); and
  2. they're more susceptible to dying from power glitches than newer gear; and
  3. having already clocked up many hours already, they'll be re-entering a high-failure-rate part of their lifespan graph.

OTOH peoples' time is relatively cheap, and there's a thriving repair industry. Indian users are much more likely to want to sit down and fix a busted monitor than they are to just chuck it and import a new one from Korea, like we do here in Australia.
