MEPISLite Released
Morgantown, WV, June 6, 2005: MEPISLite 3.3.1 is available via the MEPIS ftp
site. MEPISLite is designed for home users with modest hardware and for those
who want to use a light-weight version of MEPIS with a MEPIS Traveller Disc.
MEPISLite is intended to provide an easy migration path for most Windows 98
users. It is also an ideal alternative to Windows for preinstallation on new
computers.
MEPISLite is similar to SimplyMEPIS, except that some packages have been
changed to improve performance. Most notably, OpenOffice has been replaced
with KOffice. The Firefox browser is included but Konqueror is recommended.
Most other changes are minor tweaks "under to hood" to reduce disk thrashing.
The MEPIS Traveller Disc allows the MEPIS default user to permanently keep a
home directory on a USB Key or other pluggable device. The MEPIS OS Center
can be used with the Traveller Disc to synchronize data between machines or
to backup home directory data. Variations and enhancements of the Traveller
Disc are slated for inclusion in other MEPIS desktop products including the
next minor release of SimplyMEPIS.
Technalign is offering a modestly priced retail product, MEPIS ON THE GO,
based on MEPISLite with the Traveller Disk feature. Technalign also offers a
"Test Drive" only version for retailers, which allows the curious to check
out MEPISLite before buying the full product.
