I guess I can't help but think of the DC-3: it has been flying for 70 years, there is a waiting list for remanufactured ones, and if Boeing were to reopen the production line (yes, I know they can't) they would probably see 500-1000 of them. That particular problem is solved for the rest of mankind's existence.
This problem is solved. It is called Novell NDS (or eDirectory, or whatever). It works. Its design is smart. It solves the basic problem. It has been tested and refined under fire.
But I guess we can't use it. Too bad for mankind.
