Hello,

The Danish parliament is in the process of implementing the European Union
directive called "copyrights and related rights in the information
society" in the Danish law code. The directive is probably better known
to LWN readers as the EU version of the DMCA.

There is a protest movement (slowly) underway, organized at
www.digitalforbruger.dk, and in contrast to the US, some political parties
seem to be willing to at least consider the protesters arguments. If the
Danish politicians could be convinced to strip the anti-circumvention part
of the law, or not pass it at all, then this would be great for the Danes
and bad news for the EU directive. (Denmark has earlier been able to say
no when the lawmaking got out of hand.)

However, the number of protester's signatures is only increasing slowly,
with about 3700 last time I checked. I wonder if you could mention
"www.digitalforbruger.dk" and encourage Danish readers to check it out?

For example, the first paragraph of this message followed by a comment
like "Concerned Danes can help fighting this law by signing the protest at
www.digitalforbruger.dk" would probably be enough. (The site is in
Danish, of course...)

Sincerely, Anders Buch

Hi!

The EU version of the DMCA, known as European Union Copyright Directive (EUCD for short), is not only to be implemented in Denmark, but also in Sweden. The deadline set by the directive (as far as I can remember) is December 22, 2002.

I've provided a link[1] to a page where the EUCD can be read in several languages along with a link[2] to Eurorights site where I first read about the directive.

Unfortunately I don't know where it is possible to speak up against this directive, so if anybody has a suitable link or e-mail address please provide it!

EU-DMCA also concerns everybody else in EU

Actually the directive is supposed to be implemented in _every_ EU
country this year. In Finland there have been lots of discussion about it
during the summer, and protests by EFFI (the local version of EFF)
and others have had some effect: Unlike the original, the latest version
submitted to the parliament no longer criminalises region-modding DVD
players, and it also permits circumventing copying restrictions for private
copying, provided you can figure out how to do it on your own!
Distributing technical means intended for circumventing the restrictions
is forbidden! There are also still many other objectionable provisions.
For more info for Finns, see the EFFI homepage at http://www.effi.org/
