[Posted June 7, 2005 by ris]
KDE.News reports that Apple
Computer has announced the immediate availability of the WebKit Open Source Project. It
includes full access to the CVS of WebKit as well as an open bug database.
WebKit is the KHTML-based system framework used on Mac OS X by Safari,
Dashboard, Mail.app, and many other OS X applications.

I'm sorry, but I've always felt that Apple's big push in this
direction is a serious "All your code belongs to us, thanks!"
As opposed to "All you code belongs to us, Now bow down and
worship us."
Same message, different package.
Am I very wrong?

Yes, you are wrong. This is what the KHTML developers have asked for (the
full revision history).

This is great news, as this allows the kde developer to better follow the
changes that apple applies to webcore. I'm very glad that after the
reported "divorce" between
khtml and apple everybody seems to be happy again.
Agree.

After the initial flurry of discontent, I think this means long-term peace
and productivity. Well done, Apple, for even trying.
PS for Apple, can we please see OS X running on the triple-cored
XboX-360 before you bail out of PPC completely?
Agree.

Well done, as in a steak or hamburger?
I'm sorry, I remain a bit skeptical about this.
Apple's original OS license was a real "All your code belongs to us"
license. (APSL v1) But then they did a good job taking the time to revamp the
license and come up with a very good legal basis for community development
of software (APSL v2) .
Then they took Safari, and all it's code, and closed it up. "All
your code belongs to us, thanks guys!".
Now, they are coming back around again.
Are they coming back around because there has been a change of heart?
(as it appears and is welcome) or are they coming back around
for another code harvest?
The other "All your code belongs to us, now bow down,,, " is not
the Apple way. That's someone elses way of doing business.
I really do like the "for even trying" remark. I feel that way about
Apple, pretty much always has, that somewhere down there, folks
are trying to do good. But many times bitten, ,
WebCore is LGPL, not APSL

That is incorrect; KHTML is licensed under the LGPL, so "closing it up"
would be copyright violation. WebCore is licensed under the union of the
LGPL and a BSD-like license, not any version of the
APSL.
As further proof of the openness of WebCore, there are at least two
projects (this one and
this one) which are forks of
WebCore.
