KANOTIX - The Knoppix Improved
Is there a little-known Linux distribution consistently rated as one of the
best by a large and varied spectrum of Linux users? If we were to name one,
it would surely have to be KANOTIX, a
Knoppix-based live and installation CD, which was, until recently, one of
the best-kept secrets of the Linux distribution world. Launched in early
2004 by Joerg Schirottke, a computer science graduate from Kulmbach,
Germany, the fame of the increasingly popular KANOTIX project has spread
mainly due to the many time-saving improvements over its better-known
parent. Here is a list of some of the more interesting features of KANOTIX:

As you mentioned Unionfs I'm surprised you didn't mention Squashfs, because Unionfs is used in conjunction with Squashfs to provide the root filesystem (in much the sameway cowloop is used by cloop).

English support in KANOTIX Posted Jun 9, 2005 10:21 UTC (Thu) by mceesay (guest, #2806) [Link] I haven't used KANOTIX 64, but I would be very surprised if it wasn't as bilingual as KANOTIX 32, which when booting from the LiveCD allows you to choose between German and English with German being the default. When doing a HD install, it uses the previously selected language as the default for the installed copy of the distro.
For those using UK keyboards, when booting from the Live CD you'll want to use the lang=uk cheatcode as otherwise it defaults to lang=us when selecting English.
KANOTIX - The Knoppix Improved Posted Jun 9, 2005 10:35 UTC (Thu) by mceesay (guest, #2806) [Link] KANOTIX definitely deserves a higher profile than it currently has, so Ladislav has done a real service with this article. KANOTIX been my preferred choice for a Desktop Linux distro for a few months now. People thinking about SimplyMepis and Kubuntu should definitely be checking it out, they won't regret it.
Ladislav did omit one useful fact regarding the optimized HD install of KANOTIX. Namely that the preferred install option results in a fully Debian Sid/Unstable installation allowing apt-get access to all the latest and greatest applications in the enormous Debian repositories.
There are other things worth saying about KANOTIX, but I'm not going to rave instead I'm going to suggest downloading and burning the Live CD and give it a try for yourself, if you have an itching for a new distro.
