Novell reports loss as older business shrinks (News.com)

News.com examines the latest financial report from Novell. "Revenue rose to $297 million from $294 million, but came in below Wall Street's average estimate of $302 million. Joe Tibbetts, Novell's chief financial officer, said revenue from the company's NetWare product line declined at a slightly faster pace than expected. "Revenue grew, but we'd like to see them grow more," Tibbetts said. "Even in our Linux business, we would have liked to do better there.""

We are evaluating implementing a solution with OES as the file/print and a linux terminal server to serve the bulk users who just surf, write documents and such (about 1500 users). The small rest would be running Windows.

The only obstacle is getting linux to work against Novell smoothly. ncpfs is great but it cant for example auth sshd which for us in extension means we cant use FreeNX or nomachine NX for our thin clients. ncpfs dont handle login scripts either and thats a drag once your used to it. pam_ldap and pam_mount against Netware isnt that fun either.

The linux client is probably key to widespread adoption of Novell Netware/OES in linux camps. For us its crucial, without a linux client we might as well just run ldap/samba and stitch most functionality togheter ourselves. If the Novell Client dont come out soon we will have to look elsewhere for a solution to a file/print server.

Stitch most functionality together yourself? Why not? OpenLDAP Everywhere ran several years ago, and there's an update in the pipe, I hear. Samba 3 by Example by John Terpstra has excellent, detailed integration scenarios. Going the Samba/LDAP route looks easier and more maintainable than trying to mate an elephant and a pig.
