... if you are trying to live off of other people's donated money. There are plenty of cheaper places to live where money goes a lot farther.

I do have a consulting and book business that pay for living in Berkeley. The problem is doing half-time Free Software activism on top of the consulting and book business. It's not adding up for the upcoming year, although hopefully it will when I develop my business further. But don't consider just me - consider all of the free software activism that we should we working on and can't afford. My intent is to pay for more than one evangelist.

Yes, EFF is. Give them money too, please! But note that EFF, as a 501(c)3 non-profit, is actually not allowed to devote a substantial part of its
resources to influencing legislature! That's why the organization I'm starting is not a 501(c)3, it's a 501(c)6. See http://techp.org/Articles/FAQ.html for more about this.
