Parent article: Lack of developers delays OpenOffice.org (ComputerWorld)

Maybe it could end up being a good alternative?

# The codebase is certainly much smaller and should be much easier to get started coding on.
# They are changing to the OpenDocument format (same as OpenOffice 2).
# It's fast.
# It's free (GPL and LGPL).

Sadly, they lack developers as well.

OpenOffice lacks developers because they have only 50 developers in
Germany, a dozen or so at Red Hat and Novell and half a dozen volunteer
coders...

KOffice has ten applications (with an eleventh, KPlato coming along
nicely) and maybe twenty volunteer developers, and two sponsored
volunteers. We'd be overjoyed with OpenOffice's insufficiency of
developers...

KOffice also had to start from scratch. Sun did not. They bought something that was already a complete and somewhat established product.
