I use BINS actually. I know, it's not really an image organiser, it's for generating websites of images. In any case it stores metadata with each image.
The reason I'm suggesting this is that it comes with a program bins-edit-gui where you give the files you want to edit (use find to decide which ones) and it lets you view the image, edit the tags and indicate orientation (which it can do change losslessly).
All the configuration is XML and so is the metadata storage. I have written a few simple Perl scripts to allow me to update various parts. When you later generate your website you can select on these tags.
I wonder if it integrates with any of the other ones, because all up it could be anice combination.
