A Chat with PostgreSQL (OSDir)

OSDir talks with PostgreSQL developers. "When most people think of open source database products what comes to mind more often than not is MySQL. But that is changing in the enterprise market, and among demanding developers. The PostgreSQL project has been steadily clawing its way up the ladder in mindwidth since its inception almost ten years ago. Many say they've changed from MySQL to PostgreSQL and never looked back. I recently had a chance to chat with a few of the project's dedicated developers."

Good to see these guys getting some well-deserved publicity. PostgreSQL is a fine product that I've been using since 1998, without looking back. It hasn't received the attention it merits, though.

Your requirements may not require that you upgrade from a deprecated database environment but you'll be left behind in the future. Compatibility with future releases of all FOSS will be harder to come by. MySQL has done what Apache did, there is no room at the top for the also-ran.

I think your economics are off. Databases are a little less one-size fits all than web servers, especially considering that there are a number of things that Postgres does that Mysql doesn't. In environments (languages, distributions) like that, we see that there is indeed space for more than one.
