Because it doesn't produce rpm's that work with many distributions? I've tried to make a krita
release using checkinstall, but failed horribly. The resulting rpm was just plain unusable, even on
my own system.

I have had no problems with checkinstall on debian, redhat, and mandrake, but recently the only thing I have packaged using it was an old asclock release. Use checkinstall if the unpackaged source is all that is available for the software you need until a package complete with dependency checking etc. for your distro appears.
