Semi-legitimate HAL

Parent article: HALs considered harmful

My experience with HALs is as an end user: I ended up with an atheros based wireless card, which, according to legend, is capable of FCC designated evil so terrible that it is illegal to publish the actual capabilities of the hardware, however, there is a binary only HAL to prevent electromagnetic mayhem. So whenever I update my kernel, I have to figure out how to compile in the driver, which makes calls to the HAL binary library. I do not have the extensive leisure and skillz to reverse engineer the binary HAL. Sigh.
