1. Hal is not the same as re-inventing the wheel:

so there is _no_ excuse for alterative bi-linked lists or spin lock implementations.

2. This is C not Java, so we have 'cpp' and macros

3. This is almost always laziness, caused by programmers for whoom copy in is easier than the work to do it in a good style

4. All that said, hardware vendors must be encouraged to do it right, and without a yah-boo attitude; It might be appropriate for OSDL-Tovolds-Morton-Toscatti et al to put up a web page and a support route to help interested vendors.
