European? Wasn't it started by Mark Shuttleworth, who is South African. Even the name comes from an African language.

But as far as I know, he has been living in London for a while now and his company, Canonical Limited, is registered in the Isle of Man. I would say that Ubuntu is more European than South African, except for the project's name, of course.
