Kernel release status

The current 2.6 prepatch remains 2.6.11-rc4. The slow trickle of fixes into Linus's BitKeeper repository continues, with the final 2.6.11 release likely to happen before too long.

The current -mm prepatch is 2.6.11-rc4-mm1. Recent changes to -mm include device mapper multipath support (see below), the cpushare "secure computing" patch, a SCSI changer driver, a new set of BIO support functions, some performance counter updates, and various fixes.

The current 2.4 prepatch is 2.4.30-pre2, released by Marcelo on February 23. This prepatch adds a new set of fixes (mostly in the networking subsystem) and a few filesystem and driver updates.

one of these years he's going to admit his fiendish glee in releasing kernels just hours after LWN goes live :-)

Subject: 2.6.11-rc5

Hey, I hoped -rc4 was the last one, but we had some laptop resource
conflicts, various ppc TLB flush issues, some possible stack overflows in
networking and a number of other details warranting a quick -rc5 before
the final 2.6.11.

This time it's really supposed to be a quickie, so people who can, please
check it out, and we'll make the real 2.6.11 asap.

Mostly pretty small changes (the largest is a new SATA driver that crept
in, our bad). But worth another quick round.

I saw it coming when Andrew Morton issued a "last call for stuff from -mm to go into 2.6.11" Wednesday afternoon, which is sure to lead to either a 2.6.11 or a 2.6.11-rc5 Wednesday evening.

Is wonder if this is really funny. If there's a real coincidence, then there's some irony in it, but if kernels have been released at random times of the week for the past 5 years and every 14 or so of them have happened within 12 hours after an LWN deadline (and an equal number before), then there's just no source of humor there.

Has anyone verified the irony? I would hate for people to laugh for no legitimate reason.
