Parent article: GnomeMeeting: It's not just for video conferencing (NewsForge)

Its a real shame that we got a functional H323 client for Linux at just the point where the world had moved on. All of my company's VOIP related stuff is now over SIP.

I see a SIP test version is intended for a month or so time - but until then Gnomemeeting would give me no-one to talk to.

No one to talk to ....all by myself
No one to walk with.....I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'......savin' all my love for you

I haven't had time to try it (and it seems me neither has anyone to talk to...) but KPhone (http://www.wirlab.net/kphone/) uses SIP.

As for opening ports, yes the NetMeeting protocol was rather wasteful in that respect. But there is no getting around it, SIP too is kinda peer-to-peer when you want audio or video, so either you'll have to open some ports, or you need to have a proxy server somewhere.

Huh? Using too many ports?

If I had to manually configure something each time I "used a port", it'd be a full time job :)

There are several VoIP apps using SIP available for Linux: kphone,
linphone, minisip, phonegaim, shtoom and sjphone are a few I've looked
at. At least kphone has the beginnings of video support.
