GnomeMeeting: It's not just for video conferencing (NewsForge)

NewsForge has a review of GnomeMeeting. "GnomeMeeting is now at the 1.2 release, and is available in distribution-specific binaries for Debian, Fedora Core 2, Slackware, Mandrake, and SUSE. The source code is available as well, if your distro isn't included in that list."

Too much fiddling with ports, it looks like to me. I want something that 'just works'. I can deal with opening and closing 10 or so ports, but my parents? My fiancee` at her university laboratory? It's not going to fly...

"Fiddling with ports"? You can't have it both ways. Either you install a
box which is supposed to stop all attempts to contact you, or you don't
in which case it will "just work".

Forwarding ports is just white-listing which protocols are allowed to
contact you with. You may have to help your friends/parents with that,
but it's the same with every protocol. Your box is broken if it doesn't
require that.

Its a real shame that we got a functional H323 client for Linux at just the point where the world had moved on. All of my company's VOIP related stuff is now over SIP.

I see a SIP test version is intended for a month or so time - but until then Gnomemeeting would give me no-one to talk to.

No one to talk to ....all by myself
No one to walk with.....I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'......savin' all my love for you

I haven't had time to try it (and it seems me neither has anyone to talk to...) but KPhone (http://www.wirlab.net/kphone/) uses SIP.

As for opening ports, yes the NetMeeting protocol was rather wasteful in that respect. But there is no getting around it, SIP too is kinda peer-to-peer when you want audio or video, so either you'll have to open some ports, or you need to have a proxy server somewhere.

Huh? Using too many ports?

If I had to manually configure something each time I "used a port", it'd be a full time job :)

There are several VoIP apps using SIP available for Linux: kphone,
linphone, minisip, phonegaim, shtoom and sjphone are a few I've looked
at. At least kphone has the beginnings of video support.

It's got IPv6 support, good excuse to fire up 6to4 and get your friends to do the same :)
