Sun burns Solaris and Linux staffers (Register)

The Register reports that Sun has laid off some of its operating system staff. "Sources have informed The Register that a larger number of staffers in Sun's operating platforms group have been shown the door. Many of these workers had been cranking away on new versions of Solaris and the Java Desktop System - Sun's version of Linux. With that work mostly completed, the staffers became expendable to Sun. This looks like the tail-end of a long round of layoffs, which started last year and claimed more than 3,000 jobs."

As one of the people 'burned', all I can say is yeah, it happened, and yeah it sucked. I was at LinuxWorld when I heard, having come over here to work on the Sun stand at the show...

Anyone need a Linux/Solaris developer, long experience in Linux (mainly userspace) and some experience in Solaris kernel, based somewhere just north of London? Or a whole mixed-bag gang of us? :-)

Job market looks good from here (NYC). Hey, send me your resume (scavenger@ranok.com), if we hire you I get $nk for some small n. :-) Tell your fiends and cow-orkers. We even have a London office, as it happens, though most of the jobs are on this side of the pond.

Wow. A company which lays off people while they're working for said company at a trade fair.

My mind boggles. (I do know that this kind of thing is not entirely uncommon in US corporate culture, but still ...)

To be fair, while that is what happened, that's not really what happened :-)

They laid off everyone in my office, plus other people elsewhere in the company, all on that same day - it's not like they targetted me while I was out the country.. They've not exactly treated us well recently, but they're not quite that bad.
