I recently borrowed a friend's digital camera and was pleasantly surprised at the Linux support. It's a Canon Powershot A80 which happens to be supported by libgphoto2. I simply emerged gphoto2 and gtkam and I was set to go. I remember a time only a few years ago when it was a nightmarish task to get random hardware devices to work.

I agree, however, that a USB Mass Storage interface is by far the easiest and most intuitive way to use digital cameras. Hopefully it'll become the de facto camera protocol like it is with MP3 players.
