USB Wi-Fi adapter support in Linux (NewsForge)

Keith Winston sets up USB Wi-Fi adapter support in Linux, on NewsForge. "I needed to connect my new desktop PC wirelessly from my second floor office to my first floor network. As I started researching the options for wireless USB adapters, I realized I might have some work ahead of me. Wireless USB in Linux is still in the early stages of development. But a little searching and some trial and error led to a successful connection."

Wireless USB -- no, WiFi/wlan over USB

This isn't about "wireless USB", it's about WiFi (802.11b/11g) over USB.

There actually is something called Wireless USB that's in the works ... a wireless stack that will have a USB binding (as well as a few others) on top of it. It's been rumored for a while, some info is available on various websites including Intel's. Maybe this time next year some real products will be available.

You don't need to be confused. But if you want to be, that's OK.

Agreed - this is confusing, and googling 'Wireless USB' finds this inaccurate article title, and clones... The real Wireless USB is discussed at http://www.deviceforge.com/articles/AT9015145687.html.

Good pointer, thanks! This is basically USB over Ultra WideBand (UWB) ... which recently had a Slashdot story. Also of interest, this IBM article: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/pa-spec4.html?ca=dgr-lnxw01UWBStandard which describes the standards politics.

Are there any 802.11g USB adaptors with free drivers? I looked down the _huge_ list referenced in this article but couldn't find any - only 802.11b. If one existed I'd buy it...

I was wondering. Does anybody know of a project to tunnel usb over IP?

So you can share USB devices between computers?

Sounds like it would be an interesting project.

USB over the Internet?

Hmm, I can already share USB disks over the network using NFS, and I can send pictures from my USB web-camera over the Internet using GnomeMeeting. Is there any pressing need to encapsulate USB itself over IP?

Not any "HUGE" reason. Most devices can be shared by other means. I just thought it would be cool and somewhat usefull.
