See my above comment about why I (and many compiler researchers) expect VMs and JITs to outperform "native" code in the long-run. Even from Sun's JVM is not state-of-the-art for optimization research, and the free software Java ones are even further behind. (On the other hand, Psyco for Python does very cool things, but the Python VM has many other problems, as outlined by cajal above.)
