Easy!

I belive they want everybody to download the SUN Java pack, out of SUN sites, as a marketing strategy... Since there are already much less bloated and as good or better than SUN, Java VMs and JIT out there... they, SUN, want to score points has inventors of the language .

Really? Name one.

There are good java compilers; but there is currently no effective competing VM or JDK to my knowledge (not least because Sun's implementations of the VM and JDK have an incestuous and undocumented interrelationship so you effectively can't reimplement one without reimplementing the other, too).

If there is one, please tell me what it is: I'd like to get rid of the last non-free software on my machine.

The IBM JDK is quite good. It's a little bit hard to find on the IBM website, but it is there, up to date, and I'm using it.

However, it is just as propietary as the Sun JDK. However, I have more respect for IBM than I have for Sun, so I'm using that one.
