Looking back at 2004 (ars technica)

The ars technica year-end edition looks back at a year of Linux, and offers various awards. "So much has been said about Ubuntu that it should be apparently that it's something special. By attempting to create a single distribution with a tweaked desktop, Project Utopia, and a multicultural approach, Ubuntu has come close to being the Holy Grail of Linux for many of us." LWN is their "online publication of the year." (Thanks to "TomS").

The selection of LWN as online publication of the year is no surprise to me. I find LWM to be the best summary of Linux News anywhere. Keep up the good work.

And IMHO LWN has been that for the past 8 years or so...

Throwin' my comment in too...

As my subscriber anniversary comes up at the end of the month, my main
question is not whether to resubscribe, but at what rate. I've been proud
to be able to count myself as one doing my small part to help LWN cover
the Linux and FLOSS community, and count it a privilege to be able to do
so.

I haven't tried Ubuntu yet, because I was put off by the text installer. Will Ubuntu automatically detect my scanner and ink jet printer and set them up like Mandrake does? It's little things (well not so little if you count the time doing them by hand) that always keep me with Mandrake.

A graphical installer is not required to detect hardware. ;-)

Give Ubuntu a try. I've been very impressed with it. The installer may be text based, but it's simple, very effective, and it gets the job done. Considering that installation is only a half an hour of the time you spend on a distribution, does it really matter how 'pretty' it is?

I can't say for sure regarding your hardware, but Ubuntu managed to find and setup all of mine without a hitch, including the Wifi card, which I didn't expect it to get.
