Accoording to my wife (an MD), he got a nasty fungal infection.
This is deduced from reading his txt file, so it's just IHHO.

I had histoplasmosis and a bacterial infection at the same time, which put me in the hospital for about a week. Five treatments of Amphiteracin B (each followed by a seven-hour saline flush) later, I was feeling much better. My lungs still look like they were hit with buckshot, though. I hope Patrick's recovery is as complete as mine was.
