That's right; I hadn't read that far down in the link. The recent acute stuff sounds more viral without the similarity to the chronic part beforehand. (There are viruses which last forever in your system, kept under control by your immune system, notably chicken pox and related things; but those are acute first and minor afterwards unless your immune system breaks down.)

Accoording to my wife (an MD), he got a nasty fungal infection.

This is deduced from reading his txt file, so it's just IHHO.

I can certainly empathize with that. I had histoplasmosis and a bacterial infection at the same time, which put me in the hospital for about a week. Five treatments of Amphiteracin B (each followed by a seven-hour saline flush) later, I was feeling much better. My lungs still look like they were hit with buckshot, though. I hope Patrick's recovery is as complete as mine was.
