New Entry:
New Entry: Hi folks. Well, I'm back in California and I'm happy to let you all know
New Entry: that I'm feeling much better. :-) Here are a few updates so you can see
New Entry: that I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. Hopefully 10.1 won't
New Entry: be too far off (I'm still trying to figure out just how far behind we are,
New Entry: and what other fixes need to get merged in), and then we can look at what
New Entry: exactly needs to be done to try to switch over to the new kernel series for
New Entry: 11, or sometime later on. I still don't think it's time for that yet (it
New Entry: will be best to wait until 2.4 can be abandoned). Besides, I should
New Entry: probably be trying to take it easy as much as I can.
New Entry: There's no need to try for an encore...
New Entry:
New Entry: I offer my thanks and gratitude to the many people who sent me kind words
New Entry: and good advice, or indeed anything at all. I figure it was all for a
New Entry: reason, and that there were always lessons to be learned. Hopefully I'll
New Entry: learn them now! ;-)
New Entry:
New Entry: Most of these fine people will remain anonymous, however, one of my
New Entry: doctors was Leonardo Faoro, a medical resident at the Mayo Clinic He's
New Entry: running a support site for cancer patients at:
New Entry: http://www.cancerforums.net
New Entry: and if you feel his site might be useful for yourself or anyone you know,
New Entry: please spread the word about it. Leo is a good guy and one heck of a
New Entry: great doctor, and giving his site a little plug here is the least I can do.
New Entry: He didn't ask for it, but don't think he'll mind.
New Entry:
New Entry: Very best wishes to all, good luck in 2005, and THANKS AGAIN!,
New Entry: It's good to be back. :-)
New Entry:
New Entry: I think I've been helped now, so this text file won't hang
New Entry: around forever, but I'll leave it at
New Entry:
New Entry: http://slackware.com/~volkerdi/PAT-NEEDS-YOUR-HELP.txt
New Entry:
New Entry: for a little while in case anyone is still interested.
New Entry: It's the closest thing to a blog I've ever done. (ooooo! ;-)
New Entry:
New Entry: Take care,
New Entry:
New Entry: Pat

Patrick Volkerding returns home Posted Dec 20, 2004 15:53 UTC (Mon) by sumC (subscriber, #1262) [Link] That's great to hear! I was actually worried for him :)Anyway, in the end what did they conclude he suffered from?
Patrick Volkerding returns home Posted Dec 20, 2004 18:30 UTC (Mon) by Duncan (guest, #6647) [Link] > in the end what did they conclude he suffered from? He's not been specific in saying. This announcement is the most info available, from what I've read. There's an article about it over on /. The options of posters there (and that's all they are, speculations of folks that have read the above announcement and posted, so nothing more informed than here) tend toward three things: 1) It's personal and he has a right to keep it private. 2) Personal acknowledged, but he was the one that made it public, and now the public deserves at least /some/ bit of detail as to what it all turned out to be. 3) Some speculation around the fact that he linked a cancer forum. IMO however after reading the above, that last, the cancer forum thing, may not be directly related at all. He says one of the public things one of his doctors does is that cancer forum, and he likes the work that doctor did and thinks his public work in the form of the cancer forum deserves some attention. That isn't the same as saying he had some sort of cancer himself. Further, while I could be /very/ wrong, if it's in any way cancer and with that heavy a set of symptoms, I'd not expect it to simply "go away". The critical case symptoms might be immediately treatable, but symptoms that bad usually don't happen until near end-stage with cancer from all I know, so I'd expect if that was it, he'd have months to live. Maybe he does and is still coping with it personally so hasn't made it public yet. However, I'd tend toward the already expressed opinion that his problem was unrelated, but that the cancer forum is the only public forum available that he can steer public appreciation and attention toward, it being an unrelated project of his doctor. (BTW, someone, apparently the doctor, posted on /. that he had to come over and see where all the new traffic was coming from. He said he was impressed with the community, but (rightly) kept patient confidentiality and didn't mention anything about Patrick specifically.) Anyway... article on /. if people want more discussion, but at this point, there's no additional actual information that Patrick has chosen to make public, so... Duncan
Patrick Volkerding returns home Posted Dec 20, 2004 21:41 UTC (Mon) by iabervon (subscriber, #722) [Link] I'd guess that he's right about "complicated infective endocarditis", but that isn't really anything more than a description of the symptoms. Probably, it was some virus without a name that his immune system eventually beat, plus a bacterial outbreak due to the damage from the primary infection. There are actually remarkably few viruses which modern medicine can actually fight; most work in this area is keeping the patient alive while sick or giving the immune system a head start by teaching it what to kill in advance (for the few things where this helps).
Patrick Volkerding Posted Dec 20, 2004 21:46 UTC (Mon) by allesfresser (subscriber, #216) [Link] I am certainly no expert on the subject, but it seems to me that the situation's been going on a little too long for a viral infection (since 2001, I believe Pat said in the first message he posted.) Wouldn't his immune system have done something about it a long time ago if it were viral? Bacterial infections can stay for a long time from my experience but viruses tend to be an acute thing.
Of course, I could be badly mistaken...
Patrick Volkerding Posted Dec 21, 2004 4:45 UTC (Tue) by iabervon (subscriber, #722) [Link] That's right; I hadn't read that far down in the link. The recent acute stuff sounds more viral without the similarity to the chronic part beforehand. (There are viruses which last forever in your system, kept under control by your immune system, notably chicken pox and related things; but those are acute first and minor afterwards unless your immune system breaks down.)
Patrick Volkerding Posted Dec 22, 2004 6:59 UTC (Wed) by leews (guest, #4690) [Link] Accoording to my wife (an MD), he got a nasty fungal infection.
This is deduced from reading his txt file, so it's just IHHO.
Cheers,
Patrick Volkerding Posted Dec 23, 2004 17:58 UTC (Thu) by mmarsh (subscriber, #17029) [Link] I can certainly empathize with that. I had histoplasmosis and a bacterial infection at the same time, which put me in the hospital for about a week. Five treatments of Amphiteracin B (each followed by a seven-hour saline flush) later, I was feeling much better. My lungs still look like they were hit with buckshot, though. I hope Patrick's recovery is as complete as mine was.
