Yep it goes negative, on Linux at least (using clock format from tcl, which I think is
calling the glibc function):

0x7fffffff -> Tue Jan 19 03:14:07 AM GMT 2038
0x80000000 -> Fri Dec 13 12:45:52 PM PST 1901
