Cooker Weekly News, issue 14 ( 2004-11-15 to 2004-12-05 )
Welcome to the 14th issue of the Cooker Weekly News. As you all have seen (
or i hope so ), this issue is late, due to some archives problems, and lack
of time during the week. However, i hope you still enjoy reading this
newsletter.

* New perl and python
New rpms of perl[1] and python [2] were uploaded, requiring a rebuild of most
perl and python packages. Perl is no longer binary compatible, due to the
removal of thread, so binary packages should be rebuilt. And since a new
version of python is out this requires a recompilation of all packages, too.

* New version of xorg
The 6.8.1 version of xorg has entered cooker, thanks to Christiaan Welvaart
and Svetoslav Slavtchev [3]. This new version brings composite support for
doing all eye candy stuff you always wanted to do, with the xcompmgr
utility. However, some old programs seems to have some problem [4].

* How to measure and reduce boot time
Sitsofe Wheeler posted a mail regarding the work made by Ziga Mahkovec on the
boot time [5]. After some discussions, Buchan Milne posted his results after
using the script [6] and some comments [7]. Frederic Conrotte added a page
on the wiki to summarize the problem and the various solutions [8].

* How to define an official package
Some times ago, in order to easily support backport of cooker packages,
Buchan Milne introduced some macros in his own packages. However, Christian
Welvaart was not happy with this solution as a ppc maintainer [9]. In order
to have a solution for everybody, the macro will be used only on i586, as
Stefan proposed [10].

* Cleaning the kernel bugs list
After a discussion on the kernel bugs and new kernel maintainer[11], Adam
Williamson decided to list old kernel bugs in the bugzilla. He sent 3 emails
with a list of old kernel bugs[12][13][14], with most of them being marked
as old by Michael Bukovjan [15].

* Wiki page for errata and release notes
After a question of Gilles Mocelin regarding fam [16], replaced by gamin,
Greg Meyer [17] added a page on the wiki to document the changes between the
releases [18]. Do not hesitate to add something if you think it is worth to
be mentioned. In the same idea, Warly added two pages on the wiki to
document currently broken stuff and who to contact when something is broken
[19]. Guillaume Rousse said we might have to rethink the whole process [20].

* Using (d)ash instead of bash for booting
Sunny Dubey proposed to use dash, a clone of ash maintained by Debian instead
of ash [21]. Oden Erikson proposed to use it to speed up the boot process
[22], but the code may not really be posix compliant and contains some
bashism, as Sunny and Buchan reminded [23][24].

* Important changes in drakx
Pixel sent a email summarizing changes in the code of the installer[25].
Among other changes, drakx now uses the same technology as Move, allowing
faster loading of the rescue image.
